Virtual private networking (VPN) is a method of securing data sent across the Internet, essentially creating a private network that will allow one to access university resources as if you were in a campus lab. ***For all students working from home or other off-campus location, downloading files and accessing software will be easier if you first log in using the VPN. If you are traveling and cannot access the license server, use the VCL, etc.
So, if you have ArcGIS installed on your home computer and it crashes at the worst possible moment (it's never at the best possible moment), make sure you have allowed yourself time to use the VCL or to travel to campus to use a unity lab. ***All students should have a 'backup plan' for when things go wrong (and they will go wrong - Murphy's Law).
